The History of Planon

Discover Planon’s journey from its roots in a small back room in a small village in the Netherlands to becoming a recognised world leader. A story driven by innovation, passion, perseverance, growth and the everlasting Planon family culture.

The inception of Planon! Pierre Guelen founds Planon and holds office in a small back room in his house in Wijchen, the Netherlands. Initially called Projectbouw Guelen, the company is quickly renamed to Planon, derived from the Dutch Planmatig Onderhoud 
(planned maintenance).

1997

Planon introduces its inaugural software version for Windows, starting the journey to becoming world market leader.

Planon expands abroad and opens its first offices in the UK and Germany.

1999
2004

Planon increases its footprint in Europe by establishing an office in Belgium.

Planon makes the big move overseas and opens an office in the US. This move is complemented by Planon’s recognition as a ‘Leader’ in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant. Moreover, Planon is named one of the 50 fastest growing companies in the Netherlands for the 5th consecutive year – a first!

2006
2011

The Planon family grows: Planon acquires SiteAlpha (now SamFM). Meanwhile, expanding its global presence, Planon opens offices in France, Austria and Canada.

A big year for Planon - the company takes its first green steps with the introduction of its sustainability software and goes mobile with the launch of its first mobile application. This year also sees the inauguration of the India office, a big pillar of the company.

2012
2015

After having a first taste of Asia in India, Planon extends its reach in that region, opening offices in Hong Kong and Singapore. Additionally, a huge step is made in the field of IWMS: Planon launches the new IWMS platform called Planon Universe, a fully cloud-based platform for corporate real estate and facility managers.

Planon continues to innovate, introducing Planon Universe for Service Providers and Planon Universe for Financial Professionals. Planon is also recognised as a ‘Leader’ in the Green Quadrant IWMS by Verdantix.

2017
2018

Planon acquires conjectFM, the CAFM software business from Aconex, and strengthens its presence in the Nordics by opening an office in Sweden. Furthermore, Planon gains recognition as a supplier of cloud software on the G-Cloud 9 Digital Framework.

Planon implements its open platform strategy, allowing easy integration with enterprise applications, vendor systems, and service contractors, as well as building management systems, IoT platforms, and sensors.

 

A strong focus is also put on further growing our partner ecosystem, consisting of a global network of resellers, system integrators and technology partners. Planon and Schneider Electric announce a strategic collaboration to create a true smart building management solution across the building value chain.

2019
2020

Just a few months into the COVID-19 pandemic, Planon releases 40 use cases within its Integrated Workplace Management System (IWMS) product, that our clients can easily configure themselves to support a safe and compliant workplace re-entry.

 

Meanwhile, Planon is listed on the G-Cloud 12 Digital Framework and wins Frost & Sullivan’s 2020 Technology Innovation Leadership Award.

2020

Planon and Schneider Electric further intensify their partnership, with Schneider Electric acquiring a minority shareholder position in Planon.

 

Together, the companies invest to lead the global smart building market, jointly creating the next generation of Smart Building Management solutions to digitally transform buildings into the healthy and sustainable workplaces of the future.

Planon acquires a majority stake in Reasult and full ownership of Axonize. At the headquarters in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, the sustainable Planon Innovation Campus is officially opened. Planon is also named a ‘Leader’ for IWMS, CMMS, FM and Education Maintenance in these four IDC MarketScapes respectively.

2021
2022

The new Planon branding is launched, including a new logo and tagline: Planon. Building Connections. Also, Planon acquires companies COOR and AIA, takes a majority share in SPM Assets and obtains full ownership of Reasult. In addition, Planon closes a strategic alliance with EY.

2022

This year, Planon is again recognised as a ‘Leader’ in the Verdantix Green Quadrant Integrated Workplace Management Systems (IWMS) 2022.

 

The Planon Innovation Campus in Nijmegen also receives the WELL Platinum certification, the Planon Group is certified with the EcoVadis Silver Medal and Planon receives the ISO14001 Environment Management System accreditation for its subsidiaries in the Netherlands.

Planon takes a majority share in Ubigreen and acquires control.IT. Planon partners with Microsoft to extend its cloud offering and joins Microsoft’s Azure Marketplace and closes a strategic partnership with SAP.

 

The Planon Real Estate Management solution for SAP S/4HANA® is now an SAP endorsed app.
